Cecil, thank you for putting yourself out there for the benefit of our community. I stand with you . Why not challenge Shuler in the Democratic primary?
My thinking was that Shuler would crush me in a primary with his huge campaign fund for media buys. The dynamic in a general election is different.
However your and several other’s questions have opened the possibility of a primary run. I have nine months to make that decision. If I were to raise enough money, I could change my approach.
‘Tis more beneficial electorally and financially to gather 18,100 legit signatures than to do that primary. And, as you understate, “the dynamic in [this] general election is different.” But only in a three-way race.
Cecil voted for a project to move forward that 99% of all the community did not want and was very vocal about – this will also cause more pollution in our city – most citizens are against increased pollution and put the environment ahead of politics. He is putting his agenda against the majority of the citizens view, I thought we elect people to represent the people not themselves.
Unfortunately he will win again due to his off the cuff proposals that benefit him.
A concerned citizen that believes in environmental improvement in a small city surrounded by a beautiful environment.
Bob, I’d like to know what that project was. I’ve never seen anything go forward in Asheville that 99 percent of any community opposed. As for causing more pollution, hello? My agenda begins with environmental protection. See my latest post. http://bothwell4congress.wordpress.com/2011/05/16/our-only-planet/
And what proposals are you suggesting “benefit him.”
I am pleased that you are running for the Senate. Schuler seems even less effective than his Republican predecessor Taylor. At least Taylor actually did some things occasionally if only to just please his supporters. You have my vote.
I am looking foward to being on the panel with you and others on the weekend conference NO EXODUS. Thank you for being active and on the right side.
This is in response to Mary-Margaret who wrote in mid July…..”…you don’t believe in anything and you haven’t done anything….”
First I want to say, when a person opens their mouth, either verbally or in written form, that person reveals much more about themselves than the person they are criticizing. Your venomous email to Cecil reveals your ignorance both of the UU faith and of his public service record.
Let me first address your comment: ”You don’t believe in anything.” I am assuming you were referring to his Unitarian-Universalism faith as that is a common response to UUs from those who don’t get their facts first. Unitarian-Universalism is not a creedal faith. It is the individual’s journey that we value. For us religion is about how you live. Ours is a faith of deeds, not creeds. In simpler terms: walking your talk! For us the holy rests in the human heart, however we name or identify the scared in our lives. Some think that UU’s can believe anything and they will be accepted into the Church. That is not true. We do not welcome bigots and racists, or any others who believe in and act destructively toward others in thought, word or deed. For UU’s racial, cultural and religious diversity is a reality and we embrace it as a blessing. After all, the word religion comes from the religare which means to bind together that which as been sundered (broken apart). We are about making connections, healing and wholeness.
In the early 19th Century America there where many Unitarians or Universalists who believed in equality and justice for all and who fought for those marginalized by society….doing exactly what Jesus did in his time. With great courage and often at huge personal risk, they worked hard for a more just and equitable society, plowing the ground for freedoms and services we all now enjoy.
• Horace Greeley, newspaper publisher, campaigned against slavery
• Horace Mann, was a reformer of the public school system
• Clara Barton, founded American Red Cross
• Dorothea Dix, fought for reform and hospitals for the mentally ill
• Samuel G. Howe, founded schools for the blind
• Charles Spear, worked for prison reform
• Susan B. Anthony, suffragist (Mary-Margaret you get to vote because of her and others like her!)
• Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott (author: Little Women) and many, many more….
Cecil Bothwell is one more in a long heritage of UUs who care about his fellow man enough to put himself forward to make our community better for everyone…including you. His record speaks for itself. Tell us please of your public service record, what programs you started for the disadvantaged, what public offices you have held, what personal sacrifices you have made for your fellow man and neighbors. Tell us please how YOU walk your talk.
And one last point. Quantum physicists are proving in their research labs that the energy we put out toward others in our words and deeds is exactly what we create in our own lives. In other words, what goes around comes around. I’d be careful if I were you about the venom I spit out in the future toward anyone, even those you disagree with religiously or politically. The person you are hurting the most is YOU. Carol MacAllister
You are the only candidate that I will vote for now because you are the only one who’s bio I have read. Please circulate the bio widely – can you print some copies to hand out or provide a link on your emails. I throw out every email which I can not link to a bio. Could you send emails to every voter, it will be more effective than flashy short car or doorknob hangers.
You go, Cecil!
Go for it!!
Get some bumper stickers. Use them for spreading the word and for raising money.
coming soon
APPLAUSE!!
